Cokenach Cricket Club

Many local residents will know that the Cricket Club has been on Cokenach Estate for nearly 100 years. Following the change of ownership of the estate some five years ago, it was agreed to move the club to the field just inside the cricket club entrance. This field has needed a lot of work to make it into a suitable playing area. The Club has brought a graded material designed for the purpose from the quarry to the site in order to level the outfield. The top soil was stripped off first and has been replaced now that the levels have been achieved. This work has necessitated the lorry movements through the village, and although these will have been unwelcome, the temporary inconvenience will be seen as worthwhile once the new ground has been completed.

The estate has been generously funding this work, and the Club hopes to make an application to the England and Wales Cricket Board towards funding for a new pavilion.

The Club is very active, in particular with young people and is taking part in the Chance to Shine initiative which brings cricket to school children who otherwise would not have an opportunity to learn about and to play the game. The Club's coaches visit the local schools to carry out training and introduction sessions.  It is hoped that many of the children will be keen to play, and to come along to Cokenach.  The Club has had many of its junior members accepted to play at both District and County level.

The Club's Chairman, Adrian Cossor, believes that the new location will make the Cricket Club more visible, and hopefully a more integrated part of Barkway.  Local residents will be welcome to come along and watch games at what is felt will be a beautiful facility. It is anticipated that the Club will play next season at the new ground.

The strong belief is that the construction of the new ground will be welcomed, and that it can be enjoyed by everyone and children in particular, for many years to come.  The Club and estate are anxious to contribute to the life of the local community, and to play an active part by bringing opportunities for playing cricket to boys and girls and older players alike.
