Barkway Village Market

Barkway Village Market 2011

The Market in 2011 started grey and overcast when we set up the stalls early on the Saturday morning;  then horror of horrors it started to rain.  However, just as it looked to be set in for a wet day, the sun came out and with it came a huge crowd.  During the day, 2,546 adults paid to come in and at times the car park was almost full to overflowing.

There were events throughout the day designed to amuse all ages and tastes.  The Market was formally opened by Sarah Hillman who raised the Union Jack on the Blount’s flagpole.  In the Church there was an excellent local Arts and Crafts display as well as bell ringing, an organ recital and madrigals, visited by about 615 people during the day.

The Royston Town Band entertained us with their music and there was a dancing display by The Standon Morris Men.  Marian Murphy had again done a great job in ensuring that all the stalls were taken with the Craft Tent proving increasingly successful.

There were several food and produce stalls in the School play ground as well as in the meadows.  The steam train was popular with the younger children and there was a visit by Royston Fire Brigade in the afternoon.  To round it off, there was a tug of war at the end of the day.

The estimated profit that benefits Barkway Village Hall was around £4,000 after payment of expenses of about £2,500. These include items such as loo hire, advertising, signage, the Royston Town Band, the Morris Men, skip hire, printing and insurance.  We are grateful to the Blounts and to Karen and Neville Davis for allowing us to use their land as we could not run the market in its present form without them.

The Village Market is one of the highlights of life in Barkway and we estimate that just under £13,000 was raised at the 2011 event to benefit Village organisations, which is a remarkable achievement in times of recession and probably the best yet.

The next Market is scheduled to take place on Saturday 12th May 2012. Click here to book a stall

Market history

The origins of Barkway Market can be traced back to 1270.
There was a Market in Barkway near the pond in Mediaeval times but it was in 1977 that Barkway Street Market re-started in its present form, when Molly Bruce, Mr Fidler and others wanted to raise money for a village party to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. There have been 30 Markets since then, with only one event curtailed due to the weather and one cancellation due to foot and mouth disease.
