1. Introduction:
2011 sees the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Royal British Legion (the Legion) and of the Barkway and District Branch of the Legion. The occasion of these anniversaries presents an ideal opportunity to update our page on the village website and to remind the community of the important work of the Legion and of the local branch.

2. The Barkway and District Branch:
Barkway and District is part of 10 branches that form No.2 Group RBL, which is one of 7 groups that form Hertfordshire County RBL and combines with many other county groups to form The Royal British Legion. The Legion is also represented in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and in branches overseas.
Currently the branch has some sixty members and many more people in the local community contribute to the branch’s fundraising activities and attend the annual Remembrance Sunday services at the village War Memorial.

Branch Activities:
Barkway and District is one of a national and international network of branches, the branch is the focal point of the Legion’s local fundraising and remembrance activities, which includes:
  • conducting house to house collections for the Legion’s annual Poppy Day Appeal (donations totalling in excess of £2,000 are collected)

  • organizing the annual Remembrance Sunday services at the Village War Memorial and at the Church (many local residents attend these services together with  representatives from youth organizations and servicemen from Bassingbourn barracks)

  • holding branch social events such as:

        - bi monthly lunches a local pub or at Bury Farm, Nuthamstead

        - a BBQ on the eve of the Epsom Derby (in association with the Social Club) and a supper prior to the Grand National

        - quarterly branch committee meetings at Barkway Village Social Club

Branch Membership Appeal:

If you would like to help in raising funds for the Legion why not consider joining our branch?  Anyone can join the Legion whether or not they have a connection with the Armed Forces. Our Branch Welfare Committee is part of the RBL Welfare, which can provide assistance to any ex-service person in need of help. If you know of any ex-service person in need, please contact our secretary (see contact number above). The Legion has residential homes, rest homes and provides a wide range of welfare and pastoral care services.
